Company history

Before the establishment of the Ministry of Energy, in 1345, the Independent Irrigation Company of the West, affiliated with the Ministry of Agriculture, formed drinking water supply boards and was responsible for monitoring and distributing agricultural water in the west of the country, and it used the proceeds to dredge rivers and provide other auxiliary services. Municipalities were responsible for supplying and distributing drinking water in the province's cities at the time. Independent irrigation companies were merged with the Ministry of Energy after the establishment of the Ministry of Energy in 1347, and while the responsibility was removed from the water supply boards, it continued to operate under the same status as before, under the supervision of the Ministry of Energy's water unit.

With the establishment and formation of the Western Regional Civil Company in 1353 in the provinces of Kurdistan, Ilam, Kermanshah, Hamedan, Lorestan, and with the center of Kurdistan province in Sanandaj, the independent irrigation company of the West with the change of title to operation and formation of irrigation areas in the mentioned provinces, while merging with the Western Regional Civil Company and based on the description of new duties, started their activities as one of the units of the mentioned company.

Based on the provisions of the Articles of Association and the description of its duties in the fields of drinking water, agriculture, and industry in the provinces of Kurdistan, Ilam, Kermanshah, Hamedan, Lorestan, and parts of West Azerbaijan province, including the catchment area of Lake Urmia, Mahabad Dam, Bukan and Drinking water in Mahabad started its activities with the implementation of vital projects and the company's headquarters were established in Kurdistan province and Sanandaj city. The company's headquarters were moved from Kurdistan to Kermanshah province in 1980, due to the unique political situation in the region and based on a decision by the Supreme Council of the Islamic Revolution. The company's name was changed to West Regional Water Authority Company, and the company's obligations were detached from the previously allocated duties of West Azerbaijan Province.

Following the approval of the establishment of Water and Wastewater companies in the country in 1992, that part of the tasks included the operation and maintenance of drinking water facilities in cities and water supply networks in Kurdistan province and was considered the drinking water part of cities in the province, separated from the Kurdistan province's water affairs department, and began its activities under the name of Kurdistan Water and Wastewater Company.

The water affairs of Kurdistan province were promoted to the general administration in 1995, based on the expansion of the organization's scope of activity and structure, as well as the expansion of its responsibilities.

The Kurdistan Regional Water Authority Company was established in 2006 as a result of the approval of the transformation of the provincial water affairs departments into Regional Water Authority companies, and the Kurdistan province's general water affairs department was upgraded to the Kurdistan Regional Water Authority Company.
